Changes of the Seasons

As summer turns to fall and winter, many people notice changes in how they feel, both mentally and physically. The shift in seasons can affect mood, energy, and overall health. The older I get, the more I realize these changes and how they impact my daily life. I've also heard from many others that transitioning between these seasons can be particularly challenging.

The Impact of Seasonal Changes

The shift from summer to fall and winter can trigger a range of effects on our mental and physical state:

Mood Changes

As daylight hours decrease, some individuals may experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons. Symptoms can include feelings of sadness, lack of energy, and loss of interest in usual activities.

Physical Discomfort

The colder temperatures and changes in barometric pressure can lead to increased joint pain and muscle stiffness for some people. This physical discomfort can contribute to feelings of stress and overwhelm.

Stress and Overwhelm

The approaching holiday season, coupled with the end-of-year rush, can create additional stress. Many people feel pressured to meet year-end goals or prepare for family gatherings, leading to a sense of being overwhelmed.

Small Steps for Big Changes

Incorporating simple practices into your daily routine can help mitigate the negative effects of seasonal changes:

  1. Declutter Your Life: A tidy space can lead to a clearer mind. Take time to organize your living and working areas.

  2. Breathing Exercises: Practice deep breathing techniques to reduce stress and promote relaxation.

  3. Meditation: Even a few minutes of daily meditation can help calm your mind and improve focus.

  4. Yoga: Gentle stretching and yoga poses can alleviate physical discomfort and promote mental clarity.

  5. Walks: Regular walks, especially in natural settings, can boost mood and energy levels.

  6. Make Time with Friends: Social connections are crucial for mental health. Schedule regular catch-ups with friends.

  7. Family Dates: Plan special outings or activities with family members to strengthen bonds and create positive experiences.

  8. Self Dates: Don't forget to treat yourself. Schedule regular "me time" to do things you enjoy.

  9. Plan for the Future: Having events to look forward to can provide motivation and excitement during darker months.

  10. Learn Something New: Engaging in a new hobby or skill can keep your mind active and provide a sense of accomplishment.

  11. Sleep:  Prioritize adequate sleep to support overall health and well-being

Fall/Winter Dosha

In Ayurvedic medicine, fall and winter are associated with the Vata dosha, characterized by cold, dry, and light qualities. To balance this dosha and promote health during these seasons:

Diet Recommendations:

·      Favor warm, cooked foods over raw or cold dishes

·      Include healthy fats like ghee, olive oil, and avocados in your diet

·      Consume warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric

·      Stay hydrated with warm herbal teas

By implementing these strategies and understanding the natural rhythms of the seasons, you can navigate the transition from summer to fall and winter with greater ease and maintain a sense of balance in both mind and body.
