Reflections from the Mat

Recently, a student's question made me pause and take a moment to really think: "Do you prefer teaching yoga or practicing it?" The question appeared simple at first, yet it took me on a journey into the heart of my yoga experience.

I've always believed that my ability to teach is directly linked to my practice. The mantra, "The day I stop practicing is the day I stop teaching," has guided me, emphasizing the importance of being a lifelong student of yoga. Although my own mat experience has changed, the importance of simply showing up is still important, no matter how it expresses itself. This commitment to practice helps me to be a better teacher by incorporating what I have learned and experienced into my classes.

After giving the question some thought, I realized I don't see teaching and practicing as separate. They are interconnected, each enriching the other. My practice informs my teaching, creating a feedback loop of learning, sharing, and growing. This cycle isn't just about the physical aspects of yoga but also about the shared experiences and the community that forms in the classes.

In essence, my love for yoga doesn't distinguish between teaching and practicing. Both are expressions of my passion, ways to explore and share the transformative power of yoga. Teaching allows me to share these discoveries, offering a space where we can all grow together, regardless of where we are in our journey.

So, to answer the question: I cherish both equally. They are two sides of the same coin, a single path that continues to inspire and challenge me. Through this shared practice, we not only strengthen our bodies but also our connections with each other, creating a supportive and understanding community. This realization, sparked by a simple yet profound question, reaffirms my commitment to both teaching and practicing yoga, embracing the journey with an open heart.

I feel incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such wonderful individuals who share their thoughts with me and pose questions that prompt me to reflect not only on myself but also on the deeper reasons behind what we do.

See you on the mat!
